2004-02-23
The first Cochlear Implant was done at the SGH-Aseer by Prof. Abdul Aziz Belal, Prof. of Otology & Deen of Medical School, Alexandria University and Prof. Yasser Khafagy, ENT Consultant & head of ENT department at SGH-Aseer.
The Surgical Procedure of Implanting was done to a 7 years old boy with bilateral profound sensorneural hearing loss, has failed to achieve good results with a hearing aid.
A Cochlear implant is simply a device that converts sound energy into an electric impulse to stimulate the nerve of hearing (VIII).
The Cochlear Implant implant is made up of internal receiver, electrodes and external equipment.
The surgical procedure of implanting the internal receiver and electrodes typically lasts 2 - 3 hours. It requires general anaesthesia and the child head is shaved only in the area behind the ear, where the incision is made. The surgeon uses a drieeing procedure to reach the inner ear.
The electrodes are inserted into the Cochlea. The internal receiver is anchored to the mastoid bone and the incision is closed.
After a healing process of about six week, the child will receive the external equipment.
Then the device requires a lengthy process for mapping or setting the speech processor. This will be done by Dr. Essam El-Din (Consultant Audiologist at SGH-Aseer.
Dr. Essam will make many audiological testing to measure what the child hears with the implant before any training begins.
Once the appropriate map has been obtained, Dr. Manal Mohd Nabuib, Consultant Phoniatrician at SGH-Aseer will start the auditory & language training program to the child, inorder to help him to develop a high verbal communication level with good speech & Spoken langauge.
