With Allah blessing, a successful major spinal surgery was done in SGH Madinah
2004-11-30

With Allah blessing, a successful major spinal surgery was done in SGH Madinah was made by a team lead by Dr. Weam Farid- Consultant and head of orthopedic surgery department of  SGH Madinah.
The difficult surgery was for a patient suffering from a big kyphotic deformity of the lower thoracic spire due to old heald tuber culosis. The back bone deformity caused compression of the spinal cord opposite the 12th thoracic vertebra.
As a result of this deformity the vial function of the lungs are also deteriorated, this deterioration made the usual surgical approach to decompress the cord by opening the chest well and pushing the lungs avoid very risky. So Dr. Weam opted to approach the cord through a rather unusual and difficult approach to preserve the remaining capacity of the lung.
The operation took 3 hours and the cord was successfully and completely decompressed. The postoperative periord was uneventful and the patient who was 65 years recovered rapidly and the power of the leg improved remarkably after the surgery and he started walking exercises after 2 days surgery.
Dr. Weam still expect more improvement Allah Willing.
The patient was satisfied with the result and he now 2 weeks after surgery continues to do physiotherapy.
